On June 6th, 1944, the Allied forces landed on Omaha Beach at Normandy, France, setting in motion the bloody business of retaking Northern Europe away from the Nazis. A nightmare where over 4000 Allied soldiers were slaughtered on the first day alone, one man lived through that the longest day to visit us Back By the Woodpile. Mr. Ivy Agee Jr, with some help from his wife and grandson, shares pieces of his incredible story of survival and determination to fight till the end.

But there are still keepers of the spirit, including this weeks guest Back by the Woodpile, simply known as Jazzman. Even in his youth, jazz music’s popularity was beginning to wane which might’ve been a boon to Jazzman’s quest: collecting and preserving all things associated with jazz. The archivist lets us ride shotgun in a drive by glance of the music that revolutionized the world in more ways than one.

There’s still some torch-carrying musicians out there mostly off the radar that both know the roots of the music and respect it enough to push it to new directions, much like the long-dead rule-breakers they admire. Greg Garing we believe is one of those fellers and he’s so dedicated, he’s about killed himself trying to keep it alive. In bad health, friends of Garing have set up a GoFundMe project to help this ragged troubadour get well. And on one of his better feeling days, Greg came Back by the Woodpile to share a few of the multitude of stories he’s picked up and live throughout his career.
